15 Terms Nobody Wants to Memorize, but Every Teacher Should Know (P. 15)

1. Multimedia - A presentation that contains a variety of media elements such as text, graphics, video, animation, and other forms.

2. Multimedia Literacy - The ability for teachers to understand the operation of multimedia technology and implement it into the classroom.

3. Animation - Graphical images that have a motion component. Usually composed of multiple still images run in succession to create the illusion of motion. Usually in GIF format.

4. File compression - A method of reducing the size of a file to make for more efficient storage and file transfer. Shortens download time but requires expansion.

5. Streaming media - Audio or video files that are played or executed as they are downloaded.

6. Video capture cards - An expansion card that permits video to be transferred from an analog source into a digital computer file for storage, editing and retrieval.

7. OCR software - Optical Character Recognition software permits a scanned image containing text to be converted into word processor­ready text

8. Video frame grabbers -An expansion card that captures individual image frames from an analog video source.

9. Slide/photo scanners - A device that allows the transfer of a physical image to be transferred to a digital image for storage, editing and retrieval on a computer.

10. Clip art collections - A library of small graphical images that can be included in a multimedia presentation.

11. HyperStudio - A multimedia authoring program that permits the creation of multimedia projects, reports and presentations.

12. Digital Chisel - A piece of software that is similar in purpose to HyperStudio

13. "Fair Use" - Acquiring an image or other content from a web site requires the use of good judgement. These elements must not be acquired or used if restricted by copyright or trademark.

14. Copyright - Any original idea, image or text that a company or individual identifies as its/his own. Legally protected if registered.

15. Trademark - A symbol or phrase that is registered by a company to identify itself. Often used in marketing efforts and is legally protected.
